The "Cubo" Side Table was born from an iterative design process, starting with thumbnail sketches that explored geometric forms and functional elements. These initial sketches helped establish the table’s distinctive cubic structure and interplay of contrasting materials. From there, the concept was refined into a detailed coloured sketch, bringing clarity to proportions, material choices, and the overall aesthetic.
Once the design was finalised, the piece was hand-built in the wood shop, using a combination of poplar and plywood as the structural foundation. To enhance its visual appeal, the plywood surfaces were carefully covered with a rich mahogany veneer, adding warmth and depth to the design. Precision craftsmanship was key in assembling the seamless frame, ensuring that the light poplar structure elegantly enclosed the darker, veneered sections.
The final construction involved meticulous sanding, edge finishing, and applying a protective coat to enhance the natural beauty of the materials. The smoothly integrated drawer was crafted with clean lines and balanced proportions, maintaining both functionality and visual harmony.
